「Turn a blind eye」

********************
James: The class was interesting today, wasn’t it?
Bill: Yes, it was. I thought I knew about how the financial crisis happened in 2008; but apparently, I didn’t.
James: I feel the same way. The perspective our teacher showed us today gave me a new idea of the financial crisis.
Bill: Indeed. I was very surprised to know that even Alan Greenspan, the former chairman of the Federal Reserve of the United States, admitted he made a wrong decision.
James: I knew many people in the financial industry turned a blind eye to the fact the economy would collapse; however, now I believe Greenspan was also one of them.
Bill: That is what we need to discuss in the next class.
********************

さて、二人はいわゆる「リーマン・ショック」について話しているわけですが、当時の金融業界の人々の行動に関してJamesは「I knew many people in the financial industry turned a blind eye to the fact the economy would collapse」と言っていますね。
実は…

「Turn a blind eye」

Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary
“To pretend not to notice something bad that is happening, so you do not have to do anything about it”

James: The class was interesting today, wasn’t it?
Bill: Yes, it was. I thought I knew about how the financial crisis happened in 2008; but apparently, I didn’t.
