みなさんこんにちわ！海外映画やTVドラマ、英字新聞やニュースなど、英語を学んでいく中で出会った素敵な英語フレーズを紹介する「知らないと絶対わからない！ネイティブの英語フレーズ」
第6回目のフレーズは…
「Take something with a grain of salt」です！
直訳すると「一粒の塩と一緒に何かを持っていく」。Somethingの部分には食べ物が入るのでしょうか？一見、料理の場面などで使われそうなフレーズですが、実はまったく違った意味合いを含んでいます。一体どんな場面で使うのか。
まずは、一連の会話から見ていきましょう！

David: Hi, Peter. Have you read an article about Arsenal?
Peter: Yes I have.
David: I was very excited that they’ve finally decided to spend big in the transfer market this summer!
Peter: Well, that’s great news, I guess.
David: You don’t seem to be excited. You always said they have to buy a big name if they really want the title.
Peter: Yeah, so if the article turns out to be true, that would be great.
David: You’re saying the article is nonsense?
Peter: I’m not saying that is nonsense, but the head coach Arsene Wenger doesn’t like spending a lot of money for the transfer market, right? So, given that I just thought it is something to take with a grain of salt.

今回はサッカー好きの間で、実際に交わされていそうな会話をピックアップ！サッカーが詳しい人には、会話の流れから意味が少し汲み取れるかもしれませんね。
「Take something with a grain of salt」には「半信半疑で聞く、疑ってかかる」といった意味があります。
このフレーズは、古代ローマの博物学者・大プリニウスの「博物誌」（Naturalis Historia）の一文に由来すると言われています。
“Take two dried walnuts, two figs, and twenty leaves of rue; pound them all together, with the addition of a grain of salt; if a person takes this mixture fasting, he will be proof against all poisons for that day.”
“乾いたクルミとイチジクをふたつずつ。ルーの葉っぱを20枚。それらをすり潰して、塩粒を付け足す。この混合物を口にすれば、どんな毒でも解毒できる。”
上記の様に、「博物誌」では解毒剤になるというニュアンスで使われていました。それが、17世紀頃になると、「塩粒をかけて何かを受け入れる」→「疑いをもって物事を受け入れる」という意味で使われるようになっていったのです。

（記事が本当なら、そりゃ嬉しいさ。）
David: You’re saying the article is nonsense?
（あの記事はデタラメだって言いたいの？）
Peter: I’m not saying that is nonsense, but the head coach, Arsene Wenger*, doesn’t like spending a lot of money for the transfer market, right? So, given that, I just thought it is something to take with a grain of salt.
（そこまでは言わないけど。ベンゲル監督は多額の移籍金を払うのを嫌がる監督だろ？それを考えると、まともに受け取らない方がいいのかなって思っただけさ。）

今回の表現は、口語よりも新聞など文語で多く使われます。英語学習者は英字新聞を読んでいる方も多いので、「政治の話をしているのに、なんで急に『塩』が出てくるんだー！」なんて経験をした方もいるんではないでしょうか？
