「Smoking gun」です！
そのままの意味なら、写真のようなシーンを想像しますね。
一体どんな時に使うのでしょうか？
早速、一連の会話から見ていきましょう！
DavidとStephanyが、ニュースの事件報道について話しています。

David: I heard that a bank robber has been finally arrested.
Stephany: Yeah. But he is not arrested yet. He is currently under investigation as a person of interest.
David: Is that so? But I heard that he doesn’t have an alibi. I think it’s for sure he committed the crime.
Stephany: Most likely. But there is no smoking gun yet. Police cannot arrest him without it.
David: So, they are looking for it right now.
Stephany: Yeah. And I believe they will find it sooner or later.

Stephanyは、強盗犯の逮捕を確信しているDavisに対して「But there is no smoking gun yet. Police cannot arrest him without it.」と言っています。Smoking gunがないと逮捕できないとはどういうことなんでしょうか？
実は…
「Smoking gun」には「動かぬ証拠」
といった意味があるんです。アリバイがないとはいえ、確固たる証拠がない状況では逮捕はできないとStephanyは言っていたんですね。
このフレーズの語源はいたってシンプルです。銃口から煙が出てるということは、撃った直後であり証拠そのものであるということです。なるほど。広くアメリカで使われているフレーズで、CNNなどのニュースでも多用されるので、聞いたことがある人も多いのではないでしょうか？

（そうかもね。でも明確な証拠がなきゃ逮捕はできないわよ。）

（警察は今それを探してるってわけだ？）
Stephany: Yeah. And I believe they will find it sooner or later.
（そうね。まあ逮捕は間近だと思うけどね。）
