「Put out feelers」です！
「Feeler」はあまり聞きなれない英単語ですが、「触覚・触手」といった意味があります。一体どんな時に使うフレーズなのでしょうか？ 早速、一連の会話から見ていきましょう！ 飲食店を営むGlenと従業員であるNickが話しています。

Glen: How are our sales doing this month?
Nick: It doesn’t seem good. It’s decreased by almost 50% compared to the last month.
Glen: 50%? What’s going on?
Nick: I’m not sure. But, I think it has something to do with the new café that’s opened 2 blocks away from here this month.
Glen: I heard that café is popular with young people.
Nick: That’s what I heard too.
Glen: Is that because of their food or its atmosphere?
Nick: I don’t know. I will go there and put out feelers to see what’s going on, if you want.

実は…
「Put out feelers」には「探りを入れる」
といった意味があるんです。
Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionaryでは、以下のよう書かれていました。

Nick: I don’t know. I will go there and put out feelers to see what’s going on, if you want.
